Relay for Life
Be a part of the American Cancer Society’s Second Annual Relay For Life!
Beginning Friday evening, April 22, walkers and runners will join the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society’s Second Annual Relay For Life in Long Beach, at California State University, Long Beach.
Teams of Long Beach residents will come together in a 24-hour relay against cancer. Relay For Life is a family-oriented team event where participants can walk or run relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams can include co-workers, club members, family and friends and have gathered donations prior to the event.
Last year’s event, a first for Long Beach, over twenty teams helped raise over
$75,000 for the American Cancer Society. Funds raised by the Long Beach Relay For Life enables the American Cancer Society to support local services for cancer patients and their families such as Reach to Recovery, a peer-to peer support program for women with breast cancer and “I Can Cope,” a series of classes to educate those touched by cancer. Funds also support critical cancer research and community education programs designed to teach people how to reduce their risk of developing cancer. The American Cancer Society has served the Long Beach community since the 1960’s.
Relay For Life is a unique opportunity for the community to come together in the fight against cancer. Participants in last year’s relay included several teams of cancer survivors, families, and friends.
Relay For Life events will be held in more than 180 communities throughout California, raising nearly $20 million for the fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives from cancer and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
